Heart of Darkness
by Joseph Conrad In my own AP Literature days, I read the Heart of Darkness with my class. The themes of the book were just what I needed at that time in my life. Though I've always had a streak of wild rebelliousness in me, I was usually "goody two shoes," in elementary and middle school, making good choices, extending a smile and kindness to everyone I met, and turning in all assignments in school. I definitely had a perception of myself as being good through and through. But high school brought with it new opportunities and temptations that exposed "less than perfect" thoughts and attitudes. I found myself caught in an ever growing web of dishonesty and poor choices. Reading the "Heart of Darkness" helped me to come to terms with the darkness that can lurk in every one of us. |
