The Alchemist
by Paulo Coelho This is a story about pursuing your dreams and allowing for every experience along the way to promote growth within. It chronicles the quest of Santiago, a shepherd boy from Spain who is in search of treasures in Egypt. Meeting various people along the way we see the power of new experience and how that changes a person forever. I read this book and it made me interested in traveling to as many places that I can and to be open to experience. Since, I have traveled in this country and to Western and Eastern Europe (and this summer South America) and am so grateful for each trip as I discover new things on my journey about places, other people, and myself. |
The Autobiography of Malcolm X
When I was in middle school and high school I became enraged by the many injustices ever present in our world and in our country and I wanted to desperately to know more. In school, I would make every project one that looked at issues surrounding human rights and I would do reading outside of school to learn more about our country's history and how we got to the present day. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a painful account of some of our nation's history and a book that I bought while in high school to "know more." The Autobiography of Malcolm X is the story of a leader, a scholar, and an activist. He was part of a movement rallying for the silenced voices in America. He was an advocate for the Nation of Islam as well as an activist who encouraged black Americans to stand up and speak. The Civil Rights movement is probably the most agonizing and poignant fight for equality in our country's history and this book helps us know more. Malcolm X was taken from this world much earlier than he should have been, and we are lucky that he shared his story with Alex Haley before his assassination. |
