To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee I was 16 when I read To Kill a Mockingbird. It resonated deeply with me. As a young person, I admired Scout's ability to connect to Tom and Boo on a human level. As a child of activists, I admired Atticus' unflinching character. And as a white southerner who strongly desired racial justice, I admired Harper Lee's efforts to shine the light of day on southern oppression. |
The Hell Series
by Matt Groening When I was 23 or 24 I read Love is Hell by Matt Groening, and was amazed that someone understood love and its insanity. School is Hell should be required reading for any student who is considering becoming a teacher. Bonus poem: To An Athlete Dying Young by A.E. Housman. This poem challenged 9th grade me to look at issues from different perspectives. |
